The Relations program is a RISC OS application that is provided with WebWonder version 6.00. While WebWonder contains the user's serial number and may not be copied or re-distributed, Relations can be freely copied and is available on the author's web site. (A similar Windows version is also available.)
The purpose of the Relations program is to enable others to examine the relationships between individuals in a genealogy 'web site' created by WebWonder. Such a 'site' contains HTML files with one record per individual. WebWonder 6.00 can also be used to create family tree files. The 'site' consists of a directory that contains all the necessary files.
The picture below shows the main Relations dialogue box.
Click on an icon to go to specific help on that icon.
The box is effectively split into two halves. The left-hand half deals with family details while the right-hand half deals with individuals and the relationship between them.
Before the box can be used, a genealogy directory must be dropped onto it. When this is done, all the files in the directory are inspected, key family information is extracted and the names of the individuals discovered will be loaded into the left-hand list. An orange progress bar will show, along with an hour glass, while this is being done.
A 'Ready' message will show in the right-hand area when the load is complete and the name of the directory will appear in the lower recessed icon.
The list of names is shown as birth surname, a comma and then any forenames. If the dates of birth and/or death are known, they are shown as well. The list can contain up to 800 names and is sorted alphabetically in order of surname.
A SEL (left) click on a name in the list will load the name into the name space for individual A if it is empty, otherwise it will go into that for B. If a browser is available, then an ADJ (right) click on a name will open the individual's HTML record page.
The 'Find name' writable icon can be used to locate an individual in the list. To do this, enter the first letter or letters of the surname to go to the first match for the surname. Upper or lower case letters may be used. If the surname letters are followed by a space or a comma and then one or more letters, these will be tested against the first forename for a more precise search. The name list will be scrolled to show the matching name as near to the top of the box as possible.
The 'Family tree' button will be greyed out if no family tree file is available.
WebWonder version 6.00 can create family tree files in one of three ways. As a Draw file, as a stand-alone HTML file or as an interactive HTML file where the names are linked to the record pages of the individuals. Additionally, a user may convert the Draw file to a PDF file using Draw2PDF.
The type tree file that the button shows depends on what is available at the time. If a file called -tree/html is found in the family's directory and a browser is available then the HTML version will be opened. If that is not available then a file called -tree/pdf will be opened if a PDF viewing program is available. If that fails, then the Draw file -tree/aff will be opened if it exists.
The recessed directory icon simply contans the leaf name of the directory that holds the records for the family currently being inspected.
The two recessed icons on the right of the box show the names of the individuals to be tested in the more usual form of forenames followed by the birth surname. They may be loaded as described above , or modified using the two button described next.
Clicking on this button simply swaps the names for individuals A and B. Their order will affect the way in which the discovered relationship between them is described. In some complex cases where 'no relation' is reported, it is worth swapping the names and trying again.
This button is provided to remove the names for the individuals.
The central message area is where all activity is reported and where any eventual relationships will be shown.
This narrow strip will show an orange bar to show progress while the family record files are being examined.
When names have been loaded for individuals A and B, this button will test the family data and work out any family relationship between them.
This button will close the dialogue box but not quit the program. To re-open the box, simply click on the iconbar icon.
