Importing files into WebWonder

WebWonder's prime funtion is to create HTML files for web pages or help files. It is able to accept files from a wide variety of sources in addition to what may be typed into its editor.

Importing Text files

Sometimes, the text you wish to put on a page already exists as a text file. Text files can be loaded directly into a WebWonder page. To do this, first position the caret in the paragraph where the text is to start. Check that the paragraph style is set to suit the bulk of the text and the alignment is as you want it to be, then you can drag your text file icon onto the page window. The text will then appear as part of the page. Minor changes for headings, bold face and italics, etc. can be done in the usual way via the editor.

When importing text files in this way, WebWonder replaces all single line-feeds by a space and double line-feeds will start a new paragraph.

Importing DDF files from Impression

DDF files are text files whose first character is a ‘{’ character. These are the files that the Impression program by Computer Concepts creates when the ‘With styles’ switch is ON during a save of text or selection. These files preserve the effects such as bold, italics, underline, superscript, subscript, text colour etc., as well as justifications for right, left, centre and full. Settings stored within the style definitions are mostly ignored. Exceptions are “Main Heading” which will use an H1 paragraph and “Sub-Heading” which will be interpreted as H2. The justify setting for the “Normal” style will also be used.

Text size changes are handled as follows: text from 10pt to 12pt is passed with no size change. Text less than 10pt or greater than 12pt will be set to the nearest HTML font size value (1-7).

The parameters file may be used to specify the style names to be associated with the six Hn paragraph styles. The default settings are "Main Heading" for H1 and "Sub-Heading" for H2 with all others undefined.

Local changes to "Corpus" font will be ouput using <CODE> unless this has been turned off using a parameter.

Local changes to "Homerton" or certain other sans-serif fonts will be ouput as sans-serif unless this feature has been turned off using a parameter.

Importing DDL files from OvationPro

DDL files are special ASCII files whose type is set to OvPDDL (&B25). They are generated by David Pilling’s Ovation Pro program and can be used to preserve the effects such as bold, italic, underline, superscript, subscript, text colour etc., as well as justifications for right, left, centre and full. Settings defined within user styles will be ignored.

Text size changes are handled as follows: text from 10pt to 12pt is passed with no size change. Text less than 10pt or greater than 12pt will be set to the nearest HTML font size value (1-7).

Local changes to "Corpus" font will be ouput using <CODE> unless this has been turned off using a parameter.

Local changes to "Homerton" or certain other sans-serif fonts will be ouput as sans-serif unless this feature has been turned off using a parameter.

Importing RTF Files

WebWonder can also handle Rich Text Format files (RTF, &C32). They can be imported anywhere a text file is allowed and have the advantage of preserving the style types such as bold, italic, underline, strike-through, superscript, subscript, text colour etc., as well as justifications for right, left, centre and full. RTF tables are not supported as they do not conform to the HTML method.

Text size changes are handled as follows: text from 10pt to 12pt is passed with no size change. Text less than 10pt or greater than 12pt will be set to the nearest HTML font size value (1-7).

Icon Technology’s EasiWriter program can load Microsoft Word documents. It can then save these as RTF files. Although WebWonder cannot load Word documents directly, this route does offer a means of translating them for use by WebWonder.

Importing CSV files

One way of producing a table is to drop a Comma Separated Value (CSV &DFE) file on to the New Table dialogue box. The file should contain data as text, with each cell’s data separated by a comma. A new-line will mark the end of each row. Each row does not have to have the same number of cell data entries if cells are to span multiple rows or columns. When you click on OK the table will be created. The writable column and row settings will be ignored. This method is particularly useful when the data comes from another program. A vertical bar character can be used to signify a line-break within a cell. NB: A text file may also be used providing the cell values are separated by commas.

Another way of producing a table is an extension of the previous way. In addition to the text in the CSV file, it is possible to put file names in angled brackets, ie: <filename> in the cell data. The filename represents the name of an image file in a directory somewhere in the site. In this case the images will also be incorporated into the table. However, as only the file’s name is given, it is necessary to specify where the directory is that contains the image files. This is done by dragging the directory’s icon onto the middle Image directory icon of the dialogue box. All the images should be in the same directory.

Importing TSV files

Tab separated value file may be used in the same way as a text file to load a table from version 5.00 onwards. Here, tab characters are used instead of commas to separate the data.

Importing Text files into Tables

Text files can be loaded directly into a table cell. To do this, first position the caret in the cell where the text is to start. Drag your text file icon onto the table cell. The text will then appear as part of the table. Minor changes for headings, bold face and italics, etc. can be done in the usual way via the editor.

When importing text files in this way, WebWonder replaces all single line-feeds by a space and double line-feeds by a paragraph break.

RTF (Rich Text Format) files may also be imported into a table cell though WebWonder is less successful in mopping up errors in the RTF files in this case. (The same applies to DDF files and DDL files.)

Images

WebWonder provides the means of importing local image files or providing references to remote ones (ie ones on other sites). JPEG, GIF and PNG are supported and means are provided to convert sprites into these formats.

WebWonder has special features that can create galleries of pictures with thumbnails linked to the larger pictures as well as slide shows .

Links

From version 5.00 onwards, a URL file may be imported as a link and special link loading is supplied as part of the genealogy feature.

GEDCOM:

The genealogy feature of WebWonder version 5.00 can import and export GEDCOM files. Click here  for more.
